This stone dates back to the 1950s when synthetic corundum was produced to imitate synthetic alexandrite. In the vintage and estate industry, these synthetic corundum (synthetic sapphire) gemstones from this period are almost always referred to as synthetic alexandrite even though they are chemically synthetic corundum.
